Are you using city water? That’s a good question too by the way.

Colonization takes time. With straw I like to wait anywhere from 10-14 days depending on temp. It wouldn't hurt to try a grow using another water source. I use tap water (well water - soft water) for hydrating my bulk subs and casing layer then I sterilize them. When I make Liquid Cultures I use purified water (RO/DI water). I also mist using purified water.

I'm sure most use tap water, but when I lived in town I could not use the water for my aquarium at all. The nitrates were sky high. The water quality was so pitiful I wouldn’t drink it or even cook with it. If your water is anything like that then anything is possible.
